Heart dissection - Science

Aim:
To dissect and identify the parts of a heart.

Equipment:
Newspaper
Heart
Scalpel
Scissors

Method:
1. Spread out the newspaper 3 layers thick.
2. Identify the right atrium and the left atrium.
3. Stick your finger through the pulmonary artery into the right ventricle.
4. Stick your finger through the Aorta into the left ventricle.
5. Cut open both the left and right sides of the heart so you can see the left and right atrium, and then the left and right ventricles.

Results:
When I first touched the heart it felt very muscular and when I put my finger in the Aorta it felt quite slimy and wet. The smell of it was just disgusting. This was the first time I've ever dissected a lambs heart or even seen one but I think it was a good experience and that the dissection went quite well. I was able to identify quite a few parts of the heart like the Aorta, left and right ventricles and the septum. What I found out was that the left side was thicker than the right because it carries blood to the whole body whereas the right side only carries it to the lungs.

  1. Nice work Cinnamon, and the labelled diagram really easy to follow and a nice way to present information. Can you remember where the atria are found as well? Also nice that you have added even more information like that about the the thickness of the walls.

  2. Hi Cinnamon, nice to see you're keeping up with your Science blog!
I really like that you have annotated one of your own photos to help show your understanding of the human heart 😀🔪❤️
